The prophets Haggai and Zechariah were instrumental in getting the work on the temple restarted. The political situation had
changed, but the people did not know this when they began to
build. Think about Jesus’ words: Give to Caesar what is
Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s. Matthew 22:17
“Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God that is in Jerusalem,” v2
Even though we read here of the ongoing political shenanigans being played out against the returning exiles, we see here their courage and faith. They began the rebuilding of the temple.
It seems strange at first that Tattenai and his cronies would send to Darius asking him to search the records for the decree from Cyrus, given that it didn’t happen that long ago (17 years from Stuart Snr’s notes).
But then, seventeen years is a long time!
And we have the hindsight of only reading it yesterday!
Perhaps they were thinking to stymie the work in any way possible. Or perhaps they were hoping the decree would be lost, or that it never happened.
In any case, we’ll see tomorrow, the Lord is at work and His plans can never be thwarted.
Praise God for that!
