SJA Notes

Walking in God’s commandments, abiding in His teaching, doing what He says.

John points us to the importance of obedience to God’s word.

“Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God.”

If we love Jesus we are to do what He tells us to.

“And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments,”

John is giving a wonderful answer to “What is love?” – Love is walking according to God’s law and purpose for us, submitting under His sovereign will as we go about His will.

And in this understanding, see the teaching on the triune God,

“Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”

Coupled with the previous verse this is a powerful truth, layering together with other scripture to give us the reality of who God is.

Let’s be encouraged that love is to walk according to God’s commandments.

* Gracious Lord God,

Thank You for Your word today.

Thank You for John’s many exhortations to us.

Please help us to walk in Your laws, Your precepts, Your statutes; May we love one another.

Amen.
