Nehemiah holds what could be described as a rally such as we are sometimes blessed with. Ezra is the preacher. There is a turning back to God amongst the people. This evangelistic crusade is greatly supported by family heads!
How important is preaching!
“They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.”
Here are the basic ingredients that make up preaching.
- Reading from God’s word. How good is it to hear God’s word publically declared in our meetings together!
- Giving the sense, exhorting and convicting, making clear. Such an important job for the preacher, and praise God for the wonderful heritage of God-fearing reformed preaching we have today!
- The people understand God’s word. This is the end-point, understanding! To see Jesus throughout God’s word, to be pointed to Him!
It’s such an inspiring passage this one. Will finish up with the response of the people in v12.
“And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.”
