Verse 1 gives what they wrote to Paul about – food sacrificed to idols. In verse 9-13, Paul gives them an important principle that can be applied in many different areas of life and conduct.
“This ‘knowledge’ puffs up, but love builds up.”
Knowledge does not come before or rise above love.
In all that we do, as we hopefully grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, alongside that knowledge is a growing love for Him, and love for each other.
It is not knowledge that covers over a multitude of wrong, but love.
It is not a knowledge of God that saves us, but God’s love shown toward us in Jesus.
And as Paul tells us here, he would rather choose to put away the freedom his knowledge gives him for the protection and edification of another brother/sister in Christ.
A hard thing to wrestle with.
* Gracious Father,
Please remind us of Your steadfast love and faithfulness.
As we grow toward You, please sink us in self, that we would rise in You.
Please fix our eyes on Jesus.
