SAA Notes

Gaius is presumably Paul’s friend at Corinth whose hospitality is noted – see Romans 16:23, 1 Corinthians 1:14. I have always found his advice “imitate what is good” challenging. Find something that challenges you!

SJA Notes

“Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good.”

John gives us another deep and foundation truth that wraps through our christian walk.

Be careful with the stories of rebels, the screens and bright lights of the world that tell of the anti-heroes, the characters making evil seem good.

Be careful of the people we know, those who shine bright as they walk in bad deeds, seemingly impervious to harm and attracting glory.

Be careful that we do not imitate evil. Those people, those characters – They have not seen God.

But we who know God, who see Jesus and follow Him – We are to imitate Him, goodness, the laws and precepts and commands that God has given to us in His word.

This is a worthy saying to memorise, and to wrestle with day in and out.

* Great God Above,

You are good, and so we want to imitate You.

We thank You for Jesus, You become flesh, who shows us how to live, gives us the pattern and model to imitate.

Please help us to flee from doing evil and turn to doing good.

Amen.
