SAA Notes

Hananiah the prophet is in God’s firing line. His name means God has been gracious! When people today tell us The Lord revealed to me this or that, we can tell the truth of the matter by judging via the Scriptures. Anything contrary to the plain teaching of the Bible is untrustworthy.

SJA Notes

How uplifting are the words of Hananiah! Imagine hearing them at the time, when the great and terrible Babylon is looming over the country, having already taken much.

And a prophet of the Lord, this Hananiah, he comes along and speaks with so much vigour and force, words for good! Right?

“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.”

And how gracious (and powerful) Hananiah is. He takes the actual/material yoke from Jeremiah and breaks it, “Thus says the LORD: Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations within two years.”

You can just imagine the theatre and pageantry in this scene.

And it’s all empty words, lies and more lies.

The very next chapter God will speak through Jeremiah, “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place.”

Let’s be encouraged to stay ON GUARD against words that tickle our ears, messages that are sweet, that sound almost like they could be God’s word (because who can tell?) – How can we tell?

We have God’s word! Anything else is dust.

* All-Knowing God,

Please write Your word on our hearts today, putting it within us, so that we might _know_ You and what You say, that we might walk in obedience to You, even when it is hard, like Jeremiah did.

You have plans for us, plans for good and not evil, plans that give us a future and a hope.

Thank You for this Lord God. How great You are!

Amen.
