SAA Notes

Popular feeling can be wrong! The popular feeling in Jeremiah’s day was that the exiles were people with no future and the people God left at Jerusalem were blessed. Jeremiah told them the opposite was true! No wonder he was unpopular. 25:12 gives the prophecy about the exile lasting 70 years.

SJA Notes

We’ve touched on this before, but how _different_ is the Lord’s will here than what we would think of.

He blesses those who go into exile! And those who have refused to obey His command (to submit under Babylon and go), they are the bad figs!

It must have been extremely hard to leave the land, Israel, the place God had promised to Abraham (and that promise would have been passed down through the generations).

However. God’s word is not just for His people. It is for the world (super important)!

Look at the list in 25 v17-26. It’s a big list, and it represents those who were to drink the cup of the Lord’s wrath (v15-16 are some hard words).

And look closely at the Lord’s intent, He doesn’t bow under the refusal of any nation (v28-29). Implacable is a word that comes to mind.

Which leads us to our God. Who is HE?

“The LORD will roar from on high, and from his holy habitation utter his voice; he will roar mightily against his fold, and shout, like those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.”

And then down a bit,

“Like a lion he has left his lair, for their land has become a waste because of the sword of the oppressor, and because of his fierce anger.”

It’s important that we don’t shy away from wrestling with these words. They are hard to swallow, hard to wrap our frail human logic around. But they are the words of our Lord and God, our Saviour and our King. We must wrestle with them meekly under God’s Sovereignty.

* Father God,

Teach us Your word. Please write it on our hearts. Please set within us a desire to be taught by You, a longing to know You better, to hear even these hard words from these prophets of old, words that are Yours and from You.

You are the Lion of Judah. You will roar again from Your holy habitation.

Please put within us a heart for the lost.

Please save our loved ones, please Lord, our friends and family, our neighbours and those around us.

Please revive our hearts with Your word and Your Spirit, so that we are prepared to reap the harvest that we pray You bring.

Amen.
