May 8, Reading 2 – Proverbs 16

SAA Notes

Reflect on verse 2: motives are weighed by the Lord! In terms of verse 25, think about some of the ways has our society declared to be right, but which lead to things falling apart – in the area of modern behaviour, attitudes, morals, standards.

SJA Notes

“In the light of a king’s face there is life, and his favor is like the clouds that bring the spring rain.”

There is much wisdom here in these proverbs today, wisdom counter to the conclusions the world makes, fake-truths that we ourselves might come up with when thinking apart from the Lord.

Instead of valuing the currency of intelligence or physicality, God points us to self-control (He values this).

Instead of wrapping ourselves in the amor of pride and arrogance, instead the Lord directs us to be clothed with humility and a lowly spirit (these things He values).

“In the light of a king’s face there is life, and his favor is like the clouds that bring the spring rain.”

We can see Jesus here, clear and present!

He is the KING in whose light (the light of His wonderful face) is LIFE!

His favor on us His people is the wonderful hope of a farmer come the end of winter and seeing the rain clouds on their way.

We see this truth in Numbers chapter 6, a blessing God gives for Aaron and the priesthood (of which we are now, members of a royal priesthood),

“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”

Amen to this – In Jesus the Lord did lift up His countenance upon us and granted us a peace that passes our feeble understanding.

* God Above,

Please today and each day onwards, please show us Jesus.

Please help us to be still in the light of Your face and know that You are God.

Shine upon us, Father of Lights, shine upon us and through us into this dark world, that blind eyes might see Your love, the greatest truth there is.
