Verse 2 is a hard verse. Faith does not magic us out of the difficulties and sorrows of life, but gives us direction and strength to come through. Meditate on verses 19-27 and what it says about our mouths.
Today’s passage from James has a great deal of practical application and grounded theology. Lots of sections to take one of and wrestle with!
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.”
When we petition God for wisdom, and presumable out of that the other good things He gives (such as the fruit of His Spirit) – We are not to doubt, asking in faith.
But this can be very hard to do.
We often get bound up in our history, or that of others, and can get lost in maybes and might-haves.
Instead James very clearly exhorts us.
Ask in faith, with no doubting.
Let us do this now.
* Gracious Heavenly Father,
Please grant to us Your wisdom.
Please write Your word, the fear of the Lord, a holy reverence for Your Name – Please write them on our hearts, that we might be wise and not sin against You.
We believe Lord, help us in our unbelief!
