SAA Notes
The setting for the temptation of Jesus is important. It was the place where Israel had camped with Moses before they crossed over Jordon with Joshua. It was the place where Israel had pledged herself to the Lord. Jesus stands where Israel failed!
SJA Notes
* Holy God, Your word to us is without fault or error, please teach us from it today.
“… It is written …”
Right at the very beginning of His ministry Jesus undergoes an intense period of temptation.
This was a trial engaged by Satan (we know this is Satan from Matthew 4).
Both Jesus and Satan quote scripture during the temptation.
“… It is written …”
Sometimes we can be made to feel little by people twisting scripture, trying to tie us up in knots and loops.
Jesus was not perturbed, even as Satan teleported Him to various places.
His trust in God’s word (which He is become flesh) was absolute, and we see the Sword of the Spirit cutting through the attacks of the evil one.
God’s word is our antidote against the poison that is temptation.
Knowing God and His word grows our trust in Him and His word.
It is a good thing that we are reading His word today!
* Father God,
Thank You for Your word to us today. Please plant it deep within us and grow it, that we might bear much fruit.
Please mark us as faithful readers and doers of Your word to us Lord.
Amen.
