Restitution is a major part of making things right with God and with our neighbours. In ancient Israel there were no jails as such. When caught stealing, you and your extended family had to make restitution – often up to 20% more. Policing was done by the extended family, which was held responsible for your debts. This is a clan society. Victims saw justice.

* Dear God, thank You for today. Thank You for Your word. Please teach us today from Your word.

“… On the day he realizes his guilt.”

The realisation of guilt is a big deal.

But as importantly the actions that come out of this realisation are so important.

Here we see the mark of repentance.

A spirit of willingness to restore with abundance.

Repentance from our sinful thoughts, words and deeds requires a fundamental shift in our behaviour.

We realise our sin, and the cost of our sin.

We realise what it meant to save us, the cost to our Saviour.

And we realise that we are saved through such grace and mercy, so let us show forth that grace and mercy to those around – cup running over, abundant and more.

And it begins here in this passage with a realisation of guilt.

We can wrestle with this, what it means for us today.

* Father God in Heaven,

Please forgive us our sin.

Please open our spirits to realise our guilt, to turn away from the sin and toward You in true repentance.

May we show forth Your love abundantly without thought of return.

Amen.

This Psalm sees the mighty hand of God, not in Nature, but in the lives of men and women, specifically in that of the families of Israel. God redeems us to LIVE a resurrection quality life NOW! This is what the conclusion is all about.

SJA Notes

* God of Light, You remember Your covenant forever, for a thousand generations.

“He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country.”

The psalmist is bringing to memory what God did in the time of rescuing His people out of Egypt.

“He spoke, and the locusts came, young locusts without number,”

The psalmist is tying a foundation truth together here.

God speaks and creation listens and obeys!

From the very beginning we read,

“God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”

It is good to be reminded of what God’s word is – in the manifold ways we are given to understand it.

When God speaks THINGS HAPPEN.

His word is POWERFUL. ACTIVE. ALIVE!

God Himself is active as we read in this psalm,

“So he brought his people out with joy,”

Our God is alive and active, His word is alive and active!

And Jesus, God in the Person of the Son, is His word become flesh – Alive and active!

* God Above,

Your word is powerful and the absolute truth for us in our lives.

Your word is at work today.

Please write Your word on our hearts today that we might not sin against You.

Please plant Your word deep down in us and grow it, that we might be good soil and bear much fruit.

Amen.

Luke could have ended with Paul’s execution. He didn’t. The thought Luke wants us to see is that Rome couldn’t stop the proclamation of the Gospel, couldn’t stop Jesus and His kingdom coming. Take heart!

SJA Notes

* Faithful God, thank You for Your faithfulness to us Your people throughout all generations as declared in Your word.

“And so we came to Rome.”

It has been a long and wind-y road for Paul and his companions to get to Rome.

From our perspective, frail and limited, it can seem like plans were frustrated at almost every turn.

But Paul didn’t put his trust in plans made by himself or other humans.

He put his trust in GOD ALMIGHTY.

God does not think as we do, and is not limited in perspective and other ways as we are.

He wants us to trust in Him. Trust and obey.

The nature of this life, the frustration of humanity at every point, the twisting events, the consequences of decisions and the suffering that comes with this world – These do not fray at God’s purposes.

He wants us to trust in Him, for the road we walk, for the situations we find ourselves in.

Our God works His purposes, for our good, through all of life. Through the quiet times, through the loud. Through the horrific events and the joyous occasions. Through sorrow and loneliness and loss, through joy and fellowship and life.

Paul trusted in this our God.

Do we do the same?

* Holy God,

May our eyes be open today to see You.

May our ears be unblocked to hear You.

May our hearts be open to Your leading, our wills submitting under Your will.

May we see Jesus today!

Amen.
