December 17, Reading 3 – Revelation 9

SAA Notes

I remember when I read one book that claimed that the locusts mentioned were helicopter gun-ships – viz a viz their guns in the back. This is all science fiction and should be treated as such. The third is mentioned, because this was the share of those who did not inherit! The rule of inheritance in Israel was that the heir got two mouths or bites at the cherry, everyone else divided up the final mouth. Jesus will get two mouths!

SJA Notes

“They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he is called Apollyon.”

Coming at these passages in Revelation trying to understand as if we can map out the meaning 1:1 with what is happening in history would seem to be a perilous task.

But we can glean some clear truths.

These locusts that come after the fifth angel blows his trumpet are evil. Their king is the angel of the bottomless pit. Apollyon.

Yet they are bound into the order that God decrees and brings about. They are not outside of God’s command, His sovereign will working out even here in the end times, shrouded in prophetic foretelling.

Even in the darkest of times God is still powerful and at work. His purposes are not thwarted, and He continues to weave good through the evil that His people undergo.
