SAA Notes

What makes religion WORTHLESS? Jeremiah and other prophets dwell on this question at length. Worthless religion is when truth perishes, when we don’t practice what we preach, when there is no awe of God’s presence. Remember how you felt as you entered the headmaster’s office in primary school!

SJA Notes

Do not trust in deceptive words! As Stuart Snr says, Jeremiah and the other prophets dwell much on _false_ religion.

Deception. Lies. Falseness.

And the message goes deeper, because when you trust in deceptive words then you _practice_ deception.

Stealing. Murder. Adultery. Breaking Trust. Idolatry.

All those things and more.

And then, even more! “… And then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’ – only to go on doing all these abominations?”

The Lord is not happy with this false religion, with this deceptive practice. How unhappy? “Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.”

Our God is not a toothless tiger or a grumpy old man.

He is the righteous, holy, omnipotent and sovereign GOD!

Let’s be encouraged to examine our lives for any hint of false religion and bring it to Him. He can take care of it, His strength is enough, His love abounding, His faithfulness steadfast and true.

* Father God,

We are helpless and hopeless in our own selves, our sin. Before You we cannot stand, our best thoughts and words and deeds are grubby handprints showing the stain of sin, the truth of who we are.

But thank You for the truth of who YOU are, the truth of Jesus, that wonderful Good News!

Please help us to flee from false religion, to rid ourselves of deceptive practice.

Please help us defend and seek out the truth. Your truth.

And thank You that in Jesus we can have life and worth. That His right-ness is ours, in and through Him.

Amen.
