There are several proverbs today dealing with your behaviour and reactions to people – viz. the verbs: rescue; hold back; don’t lie in wait, gloat, fret. Payback is unwise, even stupid! 24:29

SJA Notes

“I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,”

The sluggard is a person who lacks sense.

This is true in earthly matters. And it is true in spiritual matters.

“… And behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down.”

The outworking of a sluggards non-work can be very obvious.

This is true in both the earthly lens and the spiritual lens.

Are our souls overgrown with thorns, are our walls broken down?

“Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”

This can be very easy to see in certain roles. Think of farmers, a sluggard stands out like a sore thumb.

But too, there is a spiritual warning here.

Don’t be a sluggard in the things of God – Who wants spiritual poverty?

In Ecclesiastes chapter 3 we read,

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might,”

And in Colossians chapter 3 we read,

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.”

How do we combat spiritual sloth?

Fear the Lord! Work for Him!

* Heavenly Father,

Please rescue us from the temptation to be spiritually lazy.

Please fix within us a desire to please You with whatever our hand finds to do.

And Lord, when we grow weary, please remind us of that wonderful hope, the inheritance of eternal life that we have in You.

Amen.

While the Scriptures decry sadism, brutality or bullying, they do teach corporal discipline for children. The second half of today’s reading covers the parent-child relationship from the child’s perspective with some good wisdom for children of whatever age.

SJA Notes

“Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.”

Truth. Wisdom. Instruction and Understanding.

These make up characteristics of God’s people living in God’s kingdom under God’s rule.

Jesus speaks of purchasing truth in Matthew 13,

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

And onwards,

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

God’s kingdom is one of truth, wisdom, instruction and understanding.

It is the greatest treasure!

So let us live accordingly.

* Father God,

Please set our hearts on things above, and not on earthly things.

May we be a people of Your truth, seeking Your wisdom.

Please help us with the desires of our mortal flesh, longings that can clamour so loud.

Please mark us as a faithful people, who do what You tell us to do (because we love You).

We would see Jesus today and walk in His way!

Amen.

Many of the proverbs were intended as guidance for those working in public service in the execution of their duties. You will notice several today that impinge on issues of government and society, or government and its employees.

SJA Notes

“Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.”

What do we work for? What is our purpose? Why do we go about creating or reporting or relating?

Solomon gives us a simple truth to wrestle with here.

Do not work for the purpose of getting money.

Don’t let making money be the _reason_ you work.

So what then?

Paul tells us in Colossians chapter 3,

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,”

Our purpose in working is for our Lord God!

Paul layers over this in Ephesians chapter 2,

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together in Christ – by grace you have been saved – and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, …”

This is the wealth we have stored for us, the treasure that we inherit.

Eternal life is our wealth; a saved life now and life to the full with Jesus in glory.

* Dear Lord God,

Thank You that You give us a treasure that doesn’t fade. Wealth that stays and is secure.

Thank You for Jesus – Through whom we gain this inheritance.

And Lord, please fix our eyes today on Jesus and not on the world. Not on wealth that sprouts wings and flies away.

Please help us to set our minds on things above, looking forward to the full realisation of our inheritance – Life with You in glory!

Amen.
