We find here a leader who does what’s right in God’s sight, but a people who acted corruptly in spite of his example. Jotham’s own son and heir does not follow in his father’s footsteps, therefore judgment! 28:5 The religion he turned to condoned child-sacrifice! God was not pleased with this sincere religion!

* Holy God, we praise You in Your sanctuary, we praise You in Your mighty heavens! We praise You for Your mighty deeds, according to Your excellent greatness!

“In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the LORD – this same King Ahaz.”

There is much importance weighted in how we respond to distress and hard situations.

Do we reject God like Ahaz did in times of hardship?

He turned to the false and destructive religion of a nation that God ordained to bring about punishment on Judah for their sin.

The apostle Peter no doubt wrestled with what to do as he faced the truth of his own betrayal, of the High King of Heaven, his dear friend and Saviour – Jesus, who was tried and beaten while Peter denied Him.

The response that God wants from us, that He gives to us as a healthy mechanism, a strong defence in times of trouble, Peter tells us,

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

Whether we are enduring much hardship, suffering like never before, or whether buoyed up with much joy and pleasant fields – This truth must be ours.

Let us be a people of humility, a flock that runs to the Good Shepherd, casting on Him the cares and worries of each day.

* Dear Father God,

Lord, please take our cares, we cast them on You.

We can be tired, worried, anxious about this or that.

Please take our burdens Lord God, refresh our spirits, put within us a desire to seek You and Your face, to be known by You, to know You better as You write Your word upon our hearts.

Little by little, please draw us closer to You.

Amen.

This portico is the very one that Jesus entered in Jerusalem Below, riding on the donkey’s colt. It is presently walled up. Dwell on verse 2 and what it says! We do right to trust in the Lord!

SJA Notes

* Mighty God, please show us today from Your word how we should behave as Your people.

“… and I looked, and behold, the glory of the LORD filled the temple of the LORD. And I fell on my face.”

See how Ezekiel responds to being in God’s presence.

The idea of falling on our face might be strange to us today.

To be so overcome in the presence of such awe and majesty that the only response is to fall on our faces.

Is this a foreign understanding for us today?

May it be something we wrestle with. Especially as we come together in our Sunday corporate worship, as we are brought into the throne room of our God, the heavenly realities.

Are we humble before our King as we enter His presence?

We should be. And if not now, then it will be an absolute truth for all mankind on that final day (but better by far to be humbled now than then).

May we wrestle with our pride and continually strive to put on humility as our heart-clothing.

* Loving God,

Thank You for doing what we could never do.

Taking the just punishment for our rebellion against You on Yourself, so that we (the rebellious) could obtain grace and mercy, Your favour.

Please humble us each day Lord, that we might be Your people in spirit and in truth.

Amen.

The Resurrection is the great pivot of faith. Everything depends on this being true, on this happening within time and space. John lets you see what stopped him in his tracks when he stooped in and saw, not an empty tomb or a mess of hardened myrrh-gummed linen scraps torn off the body, but the linen strips unglued and folded up by themselves. Resurrection!

SJA Notes

* Holy God, You are the God who is and was and it to come – Thank You for today!

“Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.”

What a wonderful and humble testimony from John here. He displays honesty and clarity around this pivotal moment (for him and John, and the other disciples).

That before this event they did not understand that Jesus must rise from the dead.

But now, they BELIEVED.

And what a belief this was. It marked their lives, they went out into the world and brought the gospel to those around them, the spirit setting fire to hearts and minds in a wave of motion that still carries on in force today.

These disciples gave up the pursuit of earthly prestige and wealth, power and material possessions to follow Jesus; they gave up their lives for their King.

This is a great cry for us, an exhortation. To BELIEVE! In the Risen King, the Lord Jesus.

Hallelujah, what a Saviour!

* Dear Lord God,

Thank You for Jesus, our risen Lord and King.

That You for the belief of the disciples we read in today’s passage, for the example it gives us.

Thank You that we will join with them in glory, joining with You! Worshipping You in all fully revealed majesty and spleandour.

Thank You!

Amen.
