The two witnesses are the Law and the Prophets, or Moses and Elijah. They are linked to the two olive trees (Zechariah 4) the Lord’s Anointed (or Christs) the King and the Priest. Remember what Jesus said in John 8:14-18.
The vision that John beholds is building toward a climactic end.
We read of specific timeframes, numbers and events. Yet they are shrouded and hidden in symbolic meaning.
But some things are clear.
“The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”
Here is the outworking of the final day when Jesus returns.
Judgement and Promise. Justice and Hope.
And that last verse of a glimpse into heaven with lightning and thunder and more, certainly we are building, stepping toward a great end point to the vision.
* God Above,
Please grant to us Your wisdom today, please teach us what You want us to know today from Your word.
Please write Your word upon our hearts, that we might not sin against You.
Please continue to grow us toward Jesus, affirming our hope in You, in that great end where we will dwell with You, You as God, we as Your people.
