Jesus literally says in verse 70: you are saying that I am; with the ā€œIā€ emphasised. Once again, Jesus uses the Name I am for Himself. Jesus clearly taught and acknowledged that He believed He was the Son of God, equal with the Father as God.

* Great God, thank You for Your word new every morning. Please mark it new in our hearts and minds today.

“So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer.”

Hundreds of years previous to Jesus standing there before His accusers, Isaiah prophesied,

“He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth;”

Jesus again shows His submission under the will of His Father.

We read in yesterday’s passage of Jesus’ meekness.

He did not push forward with His own will, but instead walked under His Father’s.

Today we see that even amidst false accusation and ridicule, Jesus submitted. He stayed the course.

We are to be encouraged and convicted here by our Lord’s humility. By the measure of His obedience in the face of even death.

This is our King!

What more could we do than to be a little more like Him today.

* Father God,

Thank You for Your love that we see in Jesus.

Please help us each day to follow Him, to submit ourselves under Your will, to be humble and contrite as He was.

Amen.

Jesus knew Peter ā€“ what was in him, what he would do. Jesus still loved and persevered with Peter. Always take heart and turn back to Him ā€“ and then strengthen your brethren.

SJA Notes

* God Above, Your word is life to us, written on our hearts. Please teach us of life today.

“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

Here we have the pattern of our King and Lord, our Master showing us how to live, the model by which we mark our standard of obedience.

Jesus submitted Himself under God’s will to an end that we will never have to go – He did it SO THAT we will never have to!

Onwards the steps to Calvary, Jesus knew He was walking to His death. Moving toward becoming a curse, so that the curse could be lifted. The Son rejected by His Father, so that we could be accepted.

This is the model for us of the Righteous One, our Saviour.

Let us be encouraged and convicted each day to be in prayer faithfully as our Jesus was, and when we wrestle with the Lord about His will in our lives, may it be marked with the same humility as Christ showed.

“Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

* Father God,

Thank You for Jesus.

Thank You that we can know You, love You, that we can be Your people because of Jesus.

Thank You for saving us.

Amen.

This Passover was about 40 years before the Roman War. The Jews had a generation to think about accepting the Messiah. Largely, they refused to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. What words from this supper strike your heart and mind?

SJA Notes

* Holy God, please open our hearts today to hear Your word and put it into practice.

“A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.”

We might remember what it is like (whether long ago or not long past) the youngest in a situation (the littlest, the smallest, the _least_).

When people don’t count you as much; too young, too inexperienced, too this or that.

Jesus gives us great wisdom here. A hard lesson, something to wrestle with each day.

“But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.”

This is a hard thing to do, to keep in mind, to put into practice as we grow and walk through life.

When we have accomplished something, met some standard, risen to some level – To be as the youngest, to be one who serves – It goes against the very grain of our fallen humanity.

But it is the way of Jesus.

“But not so with you.”

Let us hear the voice of our Master, our King and Saviour. Let us hear, trust and obey.

* God Almighty,

Please help us to walk in Your word, to listen to Jesus, and be as the youngest, the one who serves.

Please help us be more like Jesus each day.

Amen.
