John bypasses the trial before Caiaphas and concentrates on the trial before Pilate. It is good to read this passage on the passion out aloud.

SJA Notes

* Mighty God, we read Your word today – Thank You for saving us, despite our enmity with You.

“You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.”

Well told is the story of beloved author C.S. Lewis in describing the slaying of Aslan by the man and nasty creatures, cackling and laughing as they tormented the King.

Look here in this passage. See the Jewish people who took Jesus to Pilate. See what they were about.

They would not be denied, regardless of truth or law – This threat to their power had to go!

Pilate seeks to free Jesus time and again, having some inkling that this was no ordinary situation, nor ordinary man.

Jesus speaks the truth to Pilate,

“You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above.”

It was God’s will to slay God in the Person of the Son, the Lord’s Christ.

Jesus, the Lamb slain from before the foundation of the world, went obediently and meekly to the cross. The Son submitted under the will of His Father.

We will be put into very unjust situations. There will be times when it all feels so very unfair.

It is good to remember how Jesus was treated, and how He dealt with the most outrageously unfair situation in all of history – He submitted under the will of the Father.

* Father God,

We pray that Your will would be done here on earth, as it is in heaven.

Mark us as a faithful people who humbly submit under and go about Your will for us.

Amen.

John highlights the fact that Jesus was brought to Annas first. Annas could not find one charge to bring against the Christ. This is important! The priest finds no blemish in the sacrifice! This is important testimony to who Jesus is and shows what He has come to do.

SJA Notes

* God of grace and mercy, please sanctify us today in the truth.

“When Jesus said to them, ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.”

Every knee will bow before the King.

Who do we seek?

We seek Jesus too, to know Him and love Him as He loves us.

These men sought to capture Jesus, and eventually to kill Him.

But they fell before the King too.

We see here a little foreshadow of what will come in full on the last day.

All will bow before the King.

* Father God,

May we bow in humble adoration before You this day.

We acknowledge Your rule over our lives, Your love for us, Your kindness and grace and mercy.

Please may those around us turn from their sin and seek Your mercy.

Amen.

This is the great high priestly prayer of Jesus. He prays for Himself, for His disciples and for all throughout all ages who believe in Jesus through their message. Find two things that stand out in today’s reading that encourage you and strengthen you faith.

SJA Notes

* Gracious Father in Heaven, please we would see Jesus today.

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”

Here is a big deep truth for us to work through.

We are made holy and grown and nurtured by the Holy Spirit IN THE TRUTH.

Jesus prays this wonderful High-Priestly prayer for us His people.

He calls out that we are sanctified in the truth.

What is truth?

(as we read Pilot asking Jesus not long after this prayer)

Jesus gives us the answer.

God’s word, become flesh in Jesus – God’s word IS TRUTH!

Do not be tempted by the world to water down this truth, tempted that we might be able to find truth in other places, or that God’s word some truth but is not everything.

God’s word is truth.

Full-stop. No movement or shifting. No variation.

God’s word is truth.

Let us chew this over.. Reflect on what it means for us in our lives, as we practice being holy.

God’s word is truth – Hallelujah for that!

* God Above,

Thank You for Your word, that it is truth.

Thank You for Jesus, You in the Person of the Son, who came down to earth, Your word become flesh.

Thank You Lord!

Amen.
