The church is a holy temple – public worship is a vital part of our nature and purpose, and no optional extra. Consider the terms used to describe the church – fellow-citizens, members of God’s household, a holy temple, a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit! How do these terms alter our understanding of us as a church?

SJA Notes

* Almighty God, please write Your word on our hearts today as we read it, the we might be good soil and bear much fruit.

“… Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.”

This is the vision we have of God building His church here on earth, right now today in our time (and throughout all of time).

Jesus is the cornerstone, the root of Jesse, the energy and the growth.

We are the stones, living stones, being built up.

What are we, today, being built up to? What are we, God’s people, growing into?

A HOLY TEMPLE!

Where God dwells, in Jesus He tabernacles with us, we with Him.

In the now.

And in the not yet, the bride presented to the bridegroom – The church presented to Christ Jesus, in final full completed promise.

What a day that will be, all of we God’s people from Adam through to the last day – A holy temple in the Lord!

Hallelujah, what a God we have!

* Father God in Heaven,

Please build us up as living stones, with Jesus as the cornerstone.

Mark us as a people faithful to Your word, that our foundation, our cornerstone, is Your word in practice as well as word and thought.

May we build our lives on You, the rock of ages.

Amen.

Verses 2:8-10 are a theme song for both the New and Old Testaments. They are excellent verses to memorize. Meditate on verses 1:22,23 and on the thought that we His Church are the fullness of Christ.

SJA Notes

* Dear God, You are holy and righteous – Please show us more of You today from Your word.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith.”

Here is a verse of a few words that says so much.

God’s grace is a powerful thing – Giving to us that which we do not deserve.

Because even though we are saved through faith,

“And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

This is a critical foundation point. So important.

May we never get caught up in fabricated man-wisdom to believe that we could be the author of our faith, or even have any part in generating it. Even a little bit.

No!

We are HIS workmanship.

Created in CHRIST JESUS!

IT is all of Him, and none of us.

*  O God, full of grace and mercy,

Please embed Your word within us.

Please help us to lift Your Name high, for we are Your workmanship.

Please help us to walk in the good works that You have created and prepared for us beforehand.

We love You, God above.

Please hear our prayer.

Amen.

These verses tell you God’s purpose for you in Christ and at least four things He gives you – verses 7-10. What does it mean for you to be for the praise of His glory?

SJA Notes

* God Above, Your word to us is light and hope. Please teach us today.

“In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, …”

What an opening this is from Paul!

We see him pointing us to God’s big wonderful omnipotent big-picture plans. And yet how the Lord has a plan for each of us individually.

Further, that our God has planned for us even before we were born, even before the foundation of the world. What a God we have!

We see too that Jesus is the crux of God’s plans. Jesus unites all things, things in heaven and things on earth.

We can be encouraged to spend time thinking about what God has done from this opening passage in Ephesians.

And be thankful, so thankful for what He has done and is doing and will continue to do.

* Father God,

Thank You for choosing us, even before the world was made.

Thank You for Jesus, in whom we see the mystery of Your will made known.

Please help us rest in You each day, taking time with You and Your word.

Amen.
