This was a very important day when Solomon had the Ark of the Covenant brought into the Temple by the Aaronic priests. The theme of this passage is: they did it God’s way! The cloud of His presence filled the Temple as it did the Tabernacle in the wilderness hundreds of years before.
“And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the LORD, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.”
What an experience this must have been – To be in the presence of the glory of the LORD that was so great all other activity was whited-out.
Hebrews 11:39-40 tells us that though this experience must have been amazing, we are not less because we were not there. In fact, Hebrews tells us that God has provided something even better for us than God’s Spirit coming down and dwelling for a time in a building of gold and stone.
“And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.”
We have the ongoing and forever presence of the Holy Spirit, dwelling within us. We are little tabernacles/temples not made with human hands, God dwells within us!
It is sometimes a temptation to wish for big dramatic experiences to cement and hammer in our faith.
He hears our fumbling, sometimes inaccurate and limited, prayers and Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26).
When we struggle with pain and loss and sadness, He helps and comforts us (God the Son refers to God the Spirit as the Helper, Comforter, Advocate – John 14).
Praise God for His Spirit, that is with us through all our days; through the tedium and the sorrow, through the joy and the busyness.
* Father God,
We are so blessed to have Your Spirit dwelling within us, that we are buildings not made by human hands where you live!
Please help us to reflect You and Your glory, to point people to You.
More of You, less of us.
And Lord, we look forward to that day where all of these shadowed earthly realities will be revealed and seen and experienced in full completeness.
