The religious leaders of Jesus’ day quoted verse 5:2 in answer to Herod’s question as to where the Messiah would be born. The promise is given that Messiah’s greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth. Be assured!
We read here both hope of salvation and the warning of judgement.
“And in that day, …” The Lord will cut off: horses, chariots, cities, strongholds, sorceries, fortune-tellers, carved images, pillars.
(You can see ch5 v10-15 are structured in a certain way, pointing more and more to the rejection of the Lord)
More than those things, the Lord will “root out” the idolatry in His people.
“And in anger and wrath I will execute vengeance on the nations that did not obey.”
This is certainly a warning!
For us, it should be coal to the fire, as we tell people about Jesus. Because we believe that God will do as He says.
Now look though, at the hope, the clear pointer to Jesus that we read in v4-5.
“And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majrest of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace.”
AND JESUS SHALL BE OUR PEACE!
Amen to this.
* Gracious Father, thank You for Jesus – Our peace!
Put within us an ever-burning flame to tell people about Him, to point people to Him, to proclaim Him and the salvation we have in Him for all of our days.
Thank You that in Jesus we have our Great Shepherd.
