The Cloud above the Tabernacle – the sign of God’s near presence. Look up cloud in a concordance and meditate on the New Testament references. The Cloud on the Mount of Transfiguration and the Cloud of Witnesses are two references worth meditating on. The cloud heralds God as the Giver of the Water of Life!

SJA Notes

Towards the end of today’s passage we read of the importance of trumpets.

That they were used as both a call to gather and for battle.

In Joshua 6 we read about the Lord’s command to Israel concerning the battle of Jericho.

On the last day – Seven trumpets of rams’ horns, blowing continually. Then at a command all the people shouted (what a noise that must have been!) and the trumpets shouted too, and the walls of Jericho fell.

In Judges 6 we ready of Gideon sounding a trumpet, calling the people to war.

In Ezekiel 33 the prophet is called to blow a trumpet as a warning to God’s people.

We see trumpets for gathering together, for joy. There are trumpets for the sounding of war, for battle against God’s enemies. And there are trumpet calls as warnings to God’s people.

We read in 1 Corinthians 15,

“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.”

There is a powerful ring to these words.

So while in the book of Numbers we are seeing the beginnings of the trumpet being used throughout God’s word – Here in 1 Corinthians we read that there will come a time when the LAST trumpet will sound.

No more calling to gather – We will be united with God, the marriage of the Lamb and the Church fulfilled. God will dwell with us, and we will be His people (Revelation 21).

No more calling for war – Jesus has put all His enemies under His feet, and the last enemy is destroyed (1 Corinthians 15:25-26).

And no more trumpet cries of warning – Judgement done (Revelation 20:11-15). Mercy realised (Revelation 21:1-7). Our calling complete (Revelation 20:15, 22:1-4).

Let us be encouraged in this vision of our hope, when the last trumpet will sound, and we shall all be changed.

* Sovereign and Holy God,

You are all-powerful, all-seeing, all-knowing and all-everywhere. There is none like You.

Please may we hear Your voice ringing through our lives, from Your word, trumpet calls to us for gathering and warning, to war against our old selves.

Please remind us of that final day, when the last trumpet will sound.

Each day Lord God, please show us Jesus! Our righteous King who will return again to call us home.

Amen.
