SAA Notes

“If the Lord had not been on our side …” The opening words of Psalm 124 follow reflection on the past. We find God’s doings, His footprints on the sand of the past. Such reflection is a catalyst to present faith.

SJA Notes

“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” 127 v2

IN VAIN we rise up early and go to sleep late, IN VAIN we build our houses, our structures, our relationships, IN VAIN we weave our protection and watch guards … UNLESS.

Unless what?

Unless the LORD BUILDS, Unless the LORD WATCHES.

We see the Preacher of Ecclesiastes wrestling with this truth.

Ch 1 v2-3 says, “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?”

And in ch 2 v14 after the “everything in its season” passage, “I perceived that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it.”

The Preacher is coming to grips with what we all should be – That is, God’s sovereignty and our place therein.

Do we go to work in vain?

Not if the LORD is on our side!

Do we build our relationships in vain, is there any reason to befriend unbelievers, what about our family members who don’t know Christ, etc etc etc?

Not if the LORD is with us! Not if He is guiding us, His word in us, His Spirit at work.

Jesus speaks of this a little it seems in Luke ch 12, with the parable of the rich man and his barns. After kicking back in his wealth, trusting in that wealth, God says, “Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?”

IN VAIN do people around us build whatever kingdoms, little or big, that they do, if they do it outside of God.

Big globe-spanning empires, or our neighbours in the house across the road trying to raise a family.

God’s Word is clear – We live in vain if we live outside of Him.

But in Jesus, our message, our hope, is in THE BEST LIFE. A life that far outpaces whatever the world can offer.

Let’s be encouraged to encourage those around us to investigate Jesus – Because outside of Him, life is vanity, what we do is in vain. But IN JESUS we have life, true eternal life, and we have it to the full!

Hallelujah, what a hope that is!
